Cairo, August 25, 2020 — Dr. Ahmed el-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, has issued a decree to add Dr. Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, Malaysia’s Minister of Religious Affairs, as a new member of the Muslim Council of Elders.
Dr. Al-Bakri is considered one of the most influential religious and social personalities in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. After being appointed mufti in 2014, he became the first mufti to serve as a government minister.
Senator Al-Bakri received a bachelor’s degree in Islamic Sharia law from the Islamic University of Madinah in 1989 and a master’s degree from the World Islamic Sciences and Education University in Syria in 1995, before earning a doctorate in fatwa management from University Science Malaysia, USM.
In the past, he was a member of various fatwa committees in many Malaysian countries, as well as a member of the Shariah Advisory Board at the Malaysian Central Bank and several other Malaysian banks. He is also a member of the International Shari’ah Research Academy, ISRA, and is a member of the advisory board of the Hajj Investment Fund.
