Dubai: Jessica Andrade will fight Katlyn Chookagian on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi on Sunday morning, but the fiery Brazilian is already looking forward to her next fight and a chance at the title.
After two consecutive losses in the welterweight division, Andrade has advanced to the UFC women’s weightlifting division, where she plans to use Chookagian as a stepping stone on her way to a coveted fight against Valentina Shevchenko, a 125-year-old champion pound.
The Russian who lives at the top of the women’s division has been on her radar for a long time and Andrade believes that once she gets rid of Chookagian, she can wage her dream battle.
‘I wanted to fight Valentina for the belt in her department. But now, when I go up, I definitely work and I think this fight puts me in a good place for the argument, ‘she said during the UFC Fight Island 6 media day on Wednesday.
“She is extraordinary. She’s better than anyone else, and I think she’s better than any girl there, and she’s the girl who has to beat now. It used to be Ronda, and now it’s Valentina. This is the girl to beat in the UFC. ”
But for that, she has to get past a super-hungry and super-skilled Chookagian (14-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) who fights against her natural weight and has a significant physical advantage over the smaller, more muscular Andrade.
The Brazilian lost her title to Zhang Weili, China, last year and then suffered a defeat against arch-rival Rose Namajunas in a narrow winner.
“It had to be Jessica Eye. She had to have surgery, but I got Katlyn, which is great. I did not expect anything less, “she said about Sunday’s fight.
“She has a good ground game. Even though she is not so powerful, she always goes. She always gets good shots. I think the difference goes into shortening the range and decreasing and working on the ground. ”
Andrade is 4/5 favorite among Chookagian, the now 11/8 outsider.
